Linen waste recycling: reviving traditional craftsmanship and fostering cultural identity

Linen processing was once inseparable from everyday life across Lithuania and much of Europe, in communal knowledge, rhythm, songs, and rituals at every stage. Today, it has nearly disappeared, and so have the experiences that once gave the material its meaning. This project works with what remains: the waste. Linen textile offcuts are ground and formed into new shapes without additional binders. The forms of the resulting objects – a bench and a floor basket – are drawn from the shapes flax acquires during processing: tied bundles, tall stalks, combed shooks. These objects embody archetypes in the history of flax.
