Vision Through Sound: Spatial Sonification Device for the Blind
Vilnius Academy of Arts
Assoc. prof Denis Orlenok
This project develops a wearable assistive device for blind and visually impaired users that translates spatial information into sound through sonification. Using artificial intelligence and machine learning, the device detects objects, estimates their distance, and provides audio and haptic feedback to help users avoid obstacles and navigate safely in unfamiliar environments. Attached via magnetic clips or worn as a pendant, it works with headphones to deliver directional audio cues. Location-tracking tags can be placed on commonly misplaced items, enabling quick retrieval. An integrated AI assistant can describe surroundings, read text aloud, and respond to voice commands in real time.
